I’m Corey Haines, SaaS marketer and maker born and raised in San Diego, California.
In my freshman year of college, a friend and I were on a 6 hour road-trip to go see some friends in another state.
There's nothing like a road trip to get some serious conversation going.
"So man, what's your long term goal? Like what do you want to be?" he asked me.
"Well, my plans kinda to just get into accounting and do the 9 to 5 until I can retire. Live a good life and good family. Accounting is what I think I can be good at" I told him.
"...that's it?" he said.
I'll never forget those words, because while they stung in the moment, they changed my outlook on life forever. He went on to talk about all the grand plans he had and how he wanted to be an entrepreneur one day.
That sparked something in me. I read the 4 Hour Workweek, Rich Dad Poor Dad, The Lean Startup, and started listening to the EntreLeadership Podcast. And then more books, more podcasts, and more audiobooks.
Fast forward some uneventful years... I applied for a marketing position at a local startup called Cordial, which I knew absolutely nothing about (and the website didn't help either).
My eyes were opened. I fell in love with SaaS.
From that time on, I spent an average of 5 hours a day listening to podcasts, watching tutorials, reading online, and reading books.
What I found was that the vast majority of marketers and founders were marketing the way they were simply because “that’s what our competitors are doing” or “that’s the way it’s always been done.”
They’ve defaulted to manipulative lead generation, growth hacks, shady tactics, shallow relationships, and “safe” strategies.
The pressure to produce results and stand out from the competition has killed the trust of the customer and the creativity of the marketer.
I don’t know about you, but I want better.
